This podcast episode features our interview with Chris Shepherd, chef/owner of Underbelly Hospitality.

Ever since 2012 when he opened Underbelly Restaurant, Chef Shepherd has been a mainstay in the Houston culinary scene.

Underbelly was a James Beard Award semifinalist for Best New Restaurant, was named one of the best new restaurants in the country by Bon Appetit and Esquire and was named one of 38 essential restaurants in America by Eater. Chris was named one of the 10 Best New Chefs in America by Food & Wine in 2013 and was then awarded the 2014 James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southwest.

He now runs Underbelly Hospitality, managing nine concepts since its start in 2018.

Chris’ foundation Southern Smoke has distributed more than $8.8 million—both directly to people and to organizations that represent the needs of people in the food and beverage industry.

From unusual apprenticeships to appreciation of fellow food-and-beverage workers and even a false COVID diagnosis – in this episode of the Stoveside Chat podcast, Chef Chris Shepherd shares his unique experiences with us.
